What is Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS)?

No, DFS is not some obscure slang coined by a talentless reality TV star.

DFS is the latest Fantasy Sports trend that allows a user to create a team for a single day/event rather than an entire season – and it is here to stay.

I have been playing fantasy sports for roughly 17 years, and over that time I have seen many changes occur.  The first of said changes being the internet availability increasing so that I did not have to go to the Richmond Memorial Library to make roster moves. Now, you may find it funny, but yes – I am so old that when I was 12 I did not have the internet at home.

But in all seriousness the prevalence of PPR, half PPR, Dynasty, Keeper, and Superflex Fantasy Leagues have all skyrocketed since I first traded Daunte Culpepper for Peter Warrick straight-up as a youngster.  For people like me (and most likely you); even with all the customization that is now included within season-long leagues; it just wasn’t enough fantasy.  I still had an itch that needed to be scratched.

Daily Fantasy Sports scratch that itch.

DFS combines the fun of Fantasy Sports with a touch of instant gratification.  It also does not have any deltadraftkings-logo-250 bravos voicing their inane opinions at your live drafts, ‘friends’ sniping your hot waiver wire pickups during playoffs even though they aren’t in contention, and most of all DraftKings (the site I use) doesn’t use kickers during football season!

If you would like to get started with DFS, join me this week for the PGA Championship Millionaire Maker by entering my username as a referral (Referral Code: https://www.draftkings.com/r/AndrewFerris).  Also, friend request me and we can get a Batavia’s Best League going.

If you have any specific questions as far as how to get started with DFS, who to select on a given day, etc., feel free to tweet @FerrisAndrew_E on Twitter.

Something to Remember

Each sport within DFS has its nuances. Golf has the Friday cut, basketball has inexplicable coaching decisions, football has injuries, baseball has rain, and so on and so forth. It is important to do as much research as possible on teams, players, coaches, and weather in order to avoid the dreaded tilt (poor lineup or bankroll decision making).

Lastly, the most important thing to remember when playing DFS is the players are not machines that perform exactly how you expect them to. You can do all the research in the world; find the perfect match up but you never know what can happen.  The player’s mom could be sick, his toe could be sore, his child could be disrupting his sleep patterns, or his wife could be cheating on him with a teammate.

You never know what can happen.

During the Masters Millionaire Maker, Brooks Koepka had 4 putts lip out on the final day. Those putts most likely cost me tens of thousands of dollars.  In this case, it was not my research that failed, it was not his play that failed me, it was life happening.

Apply that lesson to DFS, as well as your life, and you will be a much happier person.
