Following a hot start, things slowed down for the Hornets during the second half on Saturday, but they were able to hold on late and win the game 16-13 over Notre Dame.

Behind for the entire game yesterday afternoon, the Irish came storming back late in the fourth quarter, after forcing a punt down by 3 with just under two minutes remaining. Following a big punt return from ND’s Josh Johnson, which set the Irish up with first and ten from inside their opponent’s thirty yard line, it seemed as if they were in good shape to take the lead before time expired.

However, a fumble by Johnson on the very first play of the drive ended the Notre Dame threat, and gave the Hornets a well-deserved three point victory.

Pacing OA on offense, QB Allen Chatt completed 12 of 31 passes for 166 yards along with two TDs and two INTs. Chatt, although he finished with a sub 50% completion percentage, showed great ability to throw on the run and completed several nice passes over the middle and outside the numbers while rolling out of the pocket against the Irish. The OA quarterback also incorporated the Tim Tebow-style jump pass into his repertoire, which also displayed shades of Derek Jeter’s jump-throw from the third base hole.

Reice Woodward, who also produced a strong game for OA, led the Hornets’ receiving corps catching two balls for 66 yards – one of which being a 56-yard TD reception early in the game. Woodward also recovered the Johnson fumble during Notre Dame’s final drive in the fourth quarter, which sealed the deal for OA.

Rounding out the OA wideouts, Sal Schwabble had one catch for 41 yards, Ryan Emery had two for 30 yards, and Trent Stack caught two for 26 yards.

The win was a big one for Oakfield, who was able to squeeze past Notre Dame for the first time in a few years. Following the late fumble recovery on part of Woodward, you could certainly tell that the Hornets were pumped up about it.

As the Hornets began to jump up and down and embrace one another and their coaches on the sideline, you could feel the emotion of the moment.  After being beaten down for the past few years by a quality ND program, Oakfield had risen from the ashes and done what they had set out to do; BEAT ND.

Next up for OA (1-0) will be a game at Nichols this Saturday, while ND (0-1) heads to Alexander (0-1) this Friday night.
