Over the past few days, rumblings of a potential merge between the Oakfield and Pembroke Football teams have surfaced. However, with multiple sources now informing me that the two sides have decided against the merge, it seems as if GR Football will in fact remain as is going forward.

OA football practice line drills 2Despite the school district at hand (Oakfield) being not quite ready to officially announce a decision either way, I have received word from a number of GR League sources that the Hornets will indeed field a team this season.

“I have spoken with both schools and they seem to have 20-25 kids signed up and they are going to have a program this year,” said one source.

“The entire OA coaching staff seems to have been working hard all summer to ensure that they will indeed keep the team together this season. Decision should be announced in the next couple of days,” said another source.

Although a merge between the two schools sure would have made for great discussion and also would have added a jolt to the already highly anticipated 2015/2016 season, if my information is indeed correct, the decision to not go forth with the merge is certainly the best for each side – in my opinion.

Oakfield Football has a long-standing tradition of success and with plenty of talented athletes coming back this season, it would be a shame to see that tradition put on hold – or perhaps disbanded. OA football practice QB throw

Let’s hope GR Football will continue to progress, as is, for the foreseeable future.

UPDATE (8/17/15): The Oakfield Football Program has announced that they will indeed remain intact this season. “We will see what our numbers are tomorrow, but they look good,” said Oakfield Athletic Director Jeff Schlagenhauf when reached by text message last night.
