What a game.

In what was without a doubt the game of the night, the Pembroke Boys Basketball team was able to work their way past a gritty Oakfield team last night by a final score of 59-58. Propelling a strong effort from the Dragons was Zach von Kramer who led his team with 14 points – the fourteenth being the game-winning free throw with :11 left.

In defeat, Oakfield was led by 13 points a piece from Trey Nadolinski and Jake Mandel

The Dragons began last night’s contest behind by four early-on, as Oakfield grabbed a 10-6 lead midway through the first quarter. and 14-11 after the quarter came to a close. However, outscoring the Hornets 19-13 over the next 8:00 leading up to the halftime break, Pembroke was able to snatch the lead away from their opponent and carried a 30-27 advantage into the locker room.

A big reason for the sudden surge from Pembroke during the second was a sound showing from Zach Staebell, who scored 11 of his 15 total points in the quarter. Leading the way for OA throughout the first sixteen minutes was the combination of Mandel and Jordan D’Alba, who each finished the half with 7 points in a balanced effort.

To begin the third quarter it was more of the same from Pembroke, as the Dragons began to extend their lead immediately. Going up by 7 just one minute into the frame, Pembroke saw that advantage inflate all the way to 8 before the horn signaled the end of the third. Going into the fourth quarter the score was 46-38 in favor of the Dragons.

However, unable to shut it down, the Hornets fought, and fought, and eventually took a 57-56 lead with a minute to go in the game.

But staying strong, and continuing to play confidently as they had been all night long, Pembroke got a late bucket from Ryan Cansdale which put them back on top by one:

And then after a Mandel free throw for Oakfield which tied the game yet again moments later, the Dragons’ von Kramer came through with the game-clinching free throw – giving his team the win following one final stop on defense.

The win was a big one for Pembroke, who now overcomes Oakfield for the top spot in Divison I and have also solidified their spot within my Power 5 – which came out earlier this week.

For the Hornets, the loss to the Dragons is their first of the season. Each team will now enjoy the holiday and get back to work after Christmas.

Stay tuned for an updated version of the Power 5 – coming out on Monday.
