Although I have not had the opportunity to provide complete-coverage for the Pavilion Boys Basketball team this season, I wanted to make sure that everyone got to know a little bit about their top-scorer Hayden Ewell. After watching Hayden play against Pembroke in the Warsaw tip-off tournament early this season, I came away incredibly impressed with his overall size and strength which helped his effort both offensively and defensively.

Primarily a baseball player (also soccer and basketball), Hayden has still been able to develop an incredible knack for shooting the basketball – which was on full-display as he set a new school record with 45 points vs Keshequa a week ago. Not only do his skills on the court/field make him a solid get for any college program, the leadership that I have observed as well as his high-motor are what make him truly special and set him apart from the rest of the pack. Here is his profile:

AB: Who inspired you to become a a great athlete while you were growing up?

HE: My parents for always telling me that I can do better and to push myself to be the best athlete I can be. Also, my friend Dakota Kegler, who graduated last year, showed and taught me everything I know about the weight room and pushed me to get in there everyday.

AB: What challenges have you faced up until this point in you athletic career?

HE: Countless hours putting in the work that no other athletes will while still having bad overall records.

AB: How have the relationships that you have built effected your development as a player?

HE: All of the coaches will always open the weight room for me and stay while I take extra shots, and our trainer will stay as late as she can so I can better myself. They really want me to become the best athlete I can and try to get other athletes to do the same. They use me as an example and I really appreciate it.

AB: What do you do on your own in order to make yourself better?

HE: I lift 4-5 times a week, play baseball and have games all throughout summer, I go to any basketball open gyms we have, and run roads before soccer starts.

AB: In closing, where do you want sports to take you when HS is over?

HE: I want to set an example for Pavilion athletes. This generation coming through thinks that they can just come in when the season starts and play without putting in any work, and then wonder why our teams end up 4-14 to end the year. We aren’t a football school so we lack strength and speed. I do my best to get kids into the weight room as much as possible and when I leave for college next year, I want the weight room to be full every day after school.

As a three-sporter, Hayden has prepared himself for all phases at the next level and will likely carry over the lessons learned from each sport in order to better himself as an overall athlete down the road. Attending NCCC which is not too far from Genesee County, it will be exciting for those who have watched him over the past few years to continue to have the opportunity to do so. Good luck to Hayden and the entire Pavilion Boys Basketball team as the season progresses.
