As we begin to gear up for the stretch run leading up to the Section V Boys Basketball Tournament, it is now time to take a look at how each classification is shaping up.
Class AA
Aquinas (13-1) and Fairport (13-2) – each finalists in AA from a year ago – once again highlight the highest class in Section V. Beneath the two heavyweights are East (13-1) and Penfield (12-4), while Rush–Henrietta (10-4) rounds out the top-5. However, outside of the top-5 there are a few more title contenders, as Edison Tech (11-5), McQuaid (10-5), and Bishop Kearney (10-5) should each have a chance to turn some heads during the postseason and are ranked 6-8.
Class A1
Greece Athena (14-1) is without a doubt the team to beat within Class A1. Possessing one of the top-players in
Section V in forward Anthony Lamb, the Trojans will be chased by neighbor Greece Arcadia (11-4), Irondequoit (9-4), Pittsford Sutherland (10-4), Brighton (8-7), and Pittsford Mendon (7-8). Athena won last year’s title over Sutherland in a blowout.
Class A2
Batavia (9-5) will have their work cut out for them in perhaps the most-competitive of the A’s. HFL (11-4) is currently the top-seed even having lost to the Blue Devils early this season, while University Prep (9-5) and College Prep (9-7) – who each have beaten Batavia – are just behind as the 3 and 4 seeds. Wilson (8-7) and Wayne (8-7) round out the top-6 seeds in A2. Batavia lost last year’s title game to SOTA by about 10 points.
Class B1
Livonia (12-3) seems to be the dominant force within B1. With several returning players from a season ago, they should be a tough out in each round this year. Pal–Mac (10-5), Hornell (10-4), Penn Yan (10-5), Newark (9-6), and Leadership Academy (7-7) will also have a chance to reach the finals as the 2-6 seeds. Leadership won last year’s B1 title – defeating Livonia by a wide margin.
Class B2
North Rose–Wolcott (13-0) is currently unbeaten and the top seed in B2. Wellsville (12-2) is also a very tough team, while Mynderse (13-3), Attica (11-3), Le Roy (9-5), and Marcus Whitman (9-5) round out the top-6. Wellsville was last year’s champion – beating NRW in a lopsided game.
Class C1
East Rochester (13-1) leads a top-6 otherwise comprised of Avon (11-3) Pembroke (12-3), Early College (9-6),
Clyde–Savannah (9-6), and World of Inquiry (9-6). Early College was last year’s champion over ER by 23.
Class C2
Northstar (12-1), Geneseo (10-4), Perry (10-5), Bolivar–Richburg (12-5), Dundee (10-5), Campbell–Savona (10-5) lead the list of top-6 C2 teams. Northstar is without a doubt the front-runner this season, while Geneseo is coming off a loss in the title game last season to Cal-Mum.
Class D1
Genesee Valley (12-1), last year’s champ, is just behind top-seeded York (12-2), while Mount Morris (11-3), Lyndonville (12-4), Naples (11-4), and CG Finney (9-6) round out the top-6. York is probably the front-runner, but GV, Mt Morris, and Lyndonville should all have a chance to make some hay in the mid-to-late rounds.
Class D2
Elba (14-1) is the top seed in D2, while Avoca (9-5), Prattsburgh (10-6), Lima–Christian (7-6), Belfast (7-5), and Andover (8-6) are all behind the rolling Lancers. Last year, Prattsburgh won the title within this classification with a slim win over Northstar – who has since moved up to Class C2.
