Rounding out Week 2 was Batavia vs Wellsville and Elba vs Holley, as the Blue Devils rolled the Lions and the Lancers dominated the Hawks.
FINAL: Batavia 57 Wellsville 20
With the victory, the Blue Devils move to 1-1 on the season and will face Hornell in Week 3 who was recently dismantled by Livonia on Friday night.
Against the Lions, the Blue Devils running game and defense took a huge step forward. Especially impressive was running back Anthony Gallo, whose night was highlighted by a touchdown which came off of a 40-yard screen pass from Greg Mruczek.
Defensively Batavia was able to capitalize on several miscues by Wellsville, which they also committed during their Week 1 contest versus Wayland-Cohocton. The Lions were just not a good football team and the Blue Devils did exactly what they needed to do in order to walk away with the utmost confidence in themselves as a team.
Batavia is back on the road next week against Hornell with a game start of 7:30.
FINAL: Elba 32 Holley 7
Elba continues a hot streak which started with a convincing win versus Pembroke in Week 1.
The Lancers used the same game plan against the Hawks as they did the previous game, utilizing a heavy ground attack, this time led by Steele Truax. Truax finished the game with 2 touchdowns and over 100 yards as the team’s feature back.
With RB Mike Shanley nursing a leg injury, the Elba coaching staff decided to turn to Truax early, and save Shanley for the defensive side of the ball which he played exclusively for much of the game.
“He’s got it all,” said Elba head coach Mike Cintorino about Truax. “With size and speed, Steele also loves contact.”
Adding to Truax’s success offensively, John Hochmuth caught 2 touchdowns as the big target had his breakout game of the season. Richard Flores also scored a touchdown for the Lancers.
On defene, Shanley was able to make his mark despite the injury, recording an interception and several tackles. Truax once again stole Shanley’s thunder, however, grabbing at least 12 tackles according to his head coach while also forcing a fumble.
“Steele was an all-around beast today,” added Cintorino.
Next week, Elba (2-0) will face Notre Dame (0-2) at home which the Lancers’ head coach has already dubbed a “rivalry game”. Should be a good one.
