Canandaigua 6 Batavia 2 – Devils score first, unable to keep pace with Braves in long run
On Friday night at Canandaigua, the Ice Devils were overcome by an offensive onslaught which included 4 first period goals for the home team. Although Bryce Polito was able to give Batavia an early lead with a goal just 3:50 into the first period (Jones), Canandaigua went on to score 4 unanswered during the remainder of the frame and took the 3-goal lead into the short intermission.
During the second period, Polito again broke through for the Devils in order to cut the lead to 4-2 going into the final frame. However, despite the brief glimmer of hope for Batavia, the Braves quickly extinguished any chance they had of overcoming the early deficit – and went on to win the game by the 4-goal margin.
STATS:
Polito – 2 goals
Alex Jones – 1 assist
Sam Haile – 1 assist
Cryer – 41 shots/35 saves
Blue Devils only managed 6 shots throughout the game
Irondequoit 6 Notre Dame 2 – Irish play well for two periods – wear down in the third
The Irish headed to Greece on Saturday where they faced-off with the Eagles in a 4/5 matchup – with the winner earning a spot in the semi finals. To begin the contest, each side played the first 13 minutes rather evenly, but with 1:51 remaining in the first period the Eagles were able to break through and score a cheap one on ND’s Ethan Conrad. The Irish goaltender was able to make the initial stop on the Irondequoit effort, but after the Eagles’ players continued to chop at the puck, Conrad was pushed back into the net and the puck slid past the goal line.
ND’s head coach Marc Staley wasn’t particularly happy with the referee’s decision to allow the goal, as it seemed the play should have been blown dead. In fact, throughout the game there were several plays near the crease that were whistled early and it was surprising that this particular play wasn’t blown dead as well. Inconsistencies are the most frustrating thing when it comes to officiating.
Anyway, following the game’s first goal, the period came to an end with the score remaining 1-0 and the Irish would continue to look for answers offensively.
Shortly after the second started the Eagles increased the pressure on the ND offense, and extended their lead to 2-0 with 12:43 remaining in the period. Despite their early misfortune, however, the Irish would answer quickly, as just a minute later – with 11:39 remaining until the final intermission – Larry Infantino was able to light the lamp for the Irish and cut the deficit to only one.
Throughout the final ten minutes of the period each side would maintain the 2-1 score, and went into the final fifteen minutes with a decent shot at taking home the win.
At the outset of the third, the pace began to pick up. With five goals in the first six minutes of the period the score had ballooned to 6-2 in favor of the Eagles with 9:00 to go in the game. With Irondequoit possessing the 4-goal lead, the game was all but over for the Irish – and they eventually went on to lose the game by the same margin.
STATS:
Infantino – 1 goal
Ethan Hutchins – 1 goal
Ryan Antinore – 1 assist
Reid Rademacker – 1 assist
Ryan Webster – 1 assist
Ethan Conrad – 32 shots/26 saves
The Irish only managed 12 shots
There were 12 penalties called during the game between the two teams
