The Buffalo Bills defense showed up in a big way yesterday and it is time to acknowledge the fact that any questions surrounding this group going into this week, were simply misplaced. Perhaps they allowed Tennessee to control the ball a bit too much, and at times were unable to get off the field, but much like they have this season they put the clamps on during the second half and willed this team to remain in contention late in the game.

Highlighted in an overall impressive showing, defensive back Stephon Gilmore had a great day all-around vs Titans receivers – including the game clinching interception on one of the final plays of the game. Also, I thought Mario Williams came up big when it mattered most, recording a few big tackles and also a late sack of Marcus Mariota.

Going forward, with the ongoing injuries to key offensive players that are repeatedly popping up week, after week, I believe the success of this team will rely heavily upon this defense – which I believe serves them well down the stretch. Despite taking a few weeks to adjust to this new Rex Ryan offense, last year’s top-5 defense is starting to show signs of reemergence and I believe that will only progress with added chemistry in weeks to come.

All that being said, the one area of weakness for the Bills, seems to be their inability to defend the short-to-intermediate routes which have repeatedly ate them up since the matchup with New England in Week 2. Approaching their bye week, Buffalo must correct this in order to initiate their lethal pass rush during the later portions of the season, which will allow their talent in the secondary to begin to make plays. Without control over the short passing game, both of the Bills primary strengths on defense will be nothing more than an unaccessible weapons.

If the Bills are able to continue their strong effort on the back end, as well as improve upon their defense between 3-7 yards in the passing game, there will be no stopping this unit come December.
