Malachi Chenault

Batavia Football – Wide Receiver / Safety

Year: Junior

Post-graduation plans: Hopes to play sports in College and eventually get a job in the construction field.

Favorite thing about HS sports: “Just being around my teammates all the time and most of all going out and playing for everyone on game night. I’m so thankful for all of our supporters. It is truly an honor to be able to represent Batavia.”

AB: In the beginning, what made you become interested in sports?

MC: “I was actually a lazy kid before I started playing sports. That was until my cousin James Soggs got me to play football on his dad’s team. I wasn’t feeling it at first, but Beef (James’ dad), being the great coach that he was, was not going to let me stop that easy. Eventually I got into basketball as well and I have just grown to love sports I guess.”

AB: Who has continued to push you towards achieving greatness in each sport that you play?

MC: “Myself and all of my coaches. They’re always giving me opportunities to better myself before school and after, as well as over the summer.”

AB: Does playing multiple sports make it difficult sometimes to balance them out? Or do you feel your love for the game allows you to participate in both equally?

MC: “Yeah it definitely gets difficult sometimes to even them out, even with all the love I have for each sport, but whatever is in season at a given time is the one I focus on a little bit more.”

AB: How have sports helped shape you as a person? Do you take the lessons learned during practice and games and apply them to your everyday life?

MC: “They have shaped me into being a better person when it comes to following directions. I don’t really apply the lessons to my life right now, but I know I will when I get out of high school and get a quality job.”

AB: As far as the team is concerned, where do you see yourselves ending up at the end of the year? In other words, what would you consider a successful season?

MC: “I am aiming high for our team. I want to see us win a Sectional Title and I know all the guys want that as well. Also, I know we can. That is what we have been working for and what we will continue to strive for everyday. I think our season has been pretty successful so far but we can never be satisfied.

AB: How has the coaching staff helped you guys come into your own this year?

MC: “Our coaches are excellent. They give us the chances to better ourselves in the offseason, and I know they watch a lot of film on our opponent in order to get us prepared for games. They put in a lot of effort to make sure we are in the right spots in order to make a play.

Speaking highly of his coaches as well as his teammates, Chenault believes big things are in store for Batavia football. With their hot start and several winnable games remaining on their schedule, the Blue Devils could finish as one of the best teams to come through the city of Batavia in quite some time.
