On Opening Night across Section V, the Pavilion Boys Basketball team earned a wire-to-wire victory over Byron-Bergen in order to start the year on a high note. The Gophers were too much for the Bees from the opening tip, as Zach Wiedrich led Pavilion to the 68-55 victory over B-B.

Wiedrich finished with a game-high 17 points on the night, Luke Milligan was just behind him with 16, while teammates Colby Tillotson and Nate Swede each finished with 11 points a piece for the Gophers. For the Bees, Cam Shenk and Bobby Stevens each finished with 15 points a piece.

“I thought we had good balance tonight,” said Pavilion head coach Rob Milligan following the win. “Balanced scoring and balanced energy throughout, we hustled up and down the court, and we did a good enough job defensively (to win the game).”

The Gophers took an early lead on Friday evening behind six first quarter points from Milligan, and at the end of one frame they led the Bees 18-9. Pavilion’s second quarter offense was paced by Nate Swede, who chipped in six of his own during the period, and at the half it was 31-22 Gophers.

Coming out of the break it was more of the same, as Byron-Bergen simply could not find enough consistent offense to keep up with Pavilion. Wiedrich took over for the Gophers in the third, netting 7 points on his team’s way to going ahead 46-35. Pavilion continued to score at a quick pace in the fourth, and took home the 13-point win.

“It felt great to come out here and get the win (to begin the season),” commented Wiedrich following his strong effort. “(Like coach said) we had a lot of balance, and were able to find the open guy and make our shots.”

With the win Pavilion is 1-0, while Byron-Bergen is 0-1. Next up for the Gophers will be the finals of the Warsaw Tournament tomorrow night. They will play the winner of Warsaw-Red Jacket, while the Bees will face the loser in the consolation game.
