The Alexander football team took to the road on Saturday, as non-league opponent CG Finney out of Penfield proved to be too much for the Trojans.

Against Finney yesterday, Cody Trzecieski led the Trojans’ strong defensive effort for a full 48 minutes, recording 8 tackles and 1 fumble recovery from his linebacker spot.  Senior Tyler Laird also played a solid game on defense for head coach Tim Sawyer, totaling 7 tackles over the course of the contest.  Sophomore Dustin Schmeider rounded out the list of top performers on D with 4 tackles and 1 sack.

Offensively, Junior QB Jared Browne had a very strong debut.

Browne played a sound second quarter, which highlighted his performance, as he hit fellow upperclassmen FB Tyler Laird for a 41 yard touchdown pass to spark Alexander’s scoring. Late in the third quarter Browne put points on the board once again, this time on a 1 yard QB keeper up the middle from the goal line.

Junior Tailback Tim Calkins also played well versus Finney, scoring a fourth quarter touchdown on a 3 yard run which cut the lead to 22-20 with time winding down. The two-point try following Calkins’ TD failed, however, and the Trojans were forced to onside kick, which they were able to recover.

Despite the great chance, though, two plays into Alexander’s final drive CG Finney intercepted a wobbly pass and took it the distance as time expired – ending the Trojans’ hopes.

Behind for the duration of Saturday’s game, the late, diligent comeback displayed by Alexander shows great character on part of this young team. Going forward, the Trojans (0-1) must get back on track quickly, as they matchup with Notre Dame (0-1) at home next Friday night – a team who fought tooth and nail with the Oakfield Hornets this past weekend.
