Elba @ Pembroke – 7:30 pm – Livonia High School
Elba and Pembroke will begin the season tonight, as the Dragons and Lancers square off in an important league matchup that is certain to have League Title implications.
With both teams displaying high-upside offensive attacks in the preseason, tonight’s game will surely be a sight to see. Dakota Swimline leads the Pembroke offensive attack, as the well-sized, highly athletic tailback will look to find holes early, and exploit the weaknesses in the Elba defense.
From what I saw from the Lancers against Batavia in their scrimmage last weekend, their ability to get a push on defense is lacking. If they hope to contain Swimline, as well as Cal Neurohr tonight, Elba’s defensive line must step up and get penetration into the opponent’s backfield. Without pressure up the middle, Pembroke’s running game has the ability to run rough shod over any opposing team.
On offense, the Lancers’ offensive line will also be key to their success, after putting forth an impressive showing versus Batavia last week. Look for this group to get off the ball quickly and maintain good blocks long enough for their running backs to do their job.
Either way, Elba head coach Mike Cintorino is raring to go this afternoon.
“Looking forward to getting the mysteries of Week 1 out of the way,” said Cintorino earlier. “New athletes, and new coaches throughout the league, you never know what you are getting until you see them line up against teams in the league in a game situation.”
“It’s a perfect night to play some football,” he added.
All in all, I expect this game to be highly competitive but not all that high scoring.
My prediction: Elba 21 – Pembroke 20
