Kiaya Franklin – Batavia High School – Indoor Track

5’5″ – Sophomore

Career Highlight #1 – “Winning sectionals two years in a row in indoor and outdoor track.”
Career Highlight #2 – “Attending New Balance Nationals in New York City for the 4×4 relay and the Freshman 60 meter dash.”
Career Highlight #3 – “Being in the school record book in the 4×4 and in the 60 meter dash.”

Favorite thing about High School Sports: “The dedication that everyone has. Batavia is a very competitive school and it’s just so fun to be apart of the high school experience.”

Most memorable moment in High School Sports career: “That would most definitely be attending indoor track nationals in New York City my freshman year. It was the greatest experience of my life and I plan on attending many more times throughout my HS career.”

Plans after High School: “I haven’t really thought about my future career after high school, but I plan on participating in track and field in college.”

AB: What was your experience like at states this year?

KF: I had an amazing time attending 2016 indoor states at Cornell Barton Hall. It was a great experience. I ran the intersection relay with girls from my section and not from my school and it was so cool being able to be a part of something like that. We placed fifth in the state and in Federations. So I was able to meet other athletes and ask a lot of questions on how to be better from the top elite athletes around the state.

AB: The girls team had quite the season. How proud are you to call yourself a sectional champion once again?

KF: I am absolutely honored to be a part of such a wonderful and successful team – and to be a part of a back-to-back sectional winning team.

AB: What was the toughest part of this season for you to overcome?

KF: Honestly one of the toughest challenges we faced this year was losing 15 amazing and dedicated seniors from last year. And only having two seniors this year, there was a lack of upper class leadership on the team aside from our seniors.

AB: What helped you overcome that adversity?

KF: We were able to overcome this challenge by having a couple underclassmen step up and be the leaders of the team.

AB: Finally, what have you done to help the younger runs improve upon their skills the past few years?

KF: Well I just took the advice that I got when I came up in eighth grade by my upperclass teammates Becca Canale and Marissa Dispenza. They showed me that it was important to take working out and lifting seriously and it dramatically helped me.
