Over the years that I have seen Tyler play basketball, what has impressed me most has been his vocal presence both on the court and from the bench. Although his emotion and passion for the game sometimes overflows, for the most part, Tyler does a fine job sparking his team from the point guard position through his vocal leadership. Improving ten-fold since he was a youngster, Tyler is now capable to go off for 25+ points on any given night. However, his role in the offense has not called for him to do so as of late, and he has done very well serving as a facilitator to compliment his incredible scoring ability. Allowing fellow teammate Justin McLendon and his brother Rodney to take center stage offensively over their past few games, Tyler has been the straw that stirs the drink for the Wildcats as they approach the final weeks of the season, and will likely be their X-factor come tournament time. Here is his profile:

AB: Who inspired you to better yourself as an athlete growing up?

TR: My brother inspired me as an athlete growing up. I fell in the love with the game watching my brother (Rodney) work out and play. I felt if I could beat him nobody can stop me and I can stop anyone. He was number one in my mind.

AB: What would you say has been the most difficult challenge for you throughout your journey as a HS athlete?

TR: The most difficult challenge I faced throughout my high school career was becoming the floor general. It took some time for me to understand what I needed to do to become a good point guard and I still have much to learn.

AB: What have the relationships you have built along the way meant to you and your progression as an individual?

TR: The relationships I have built mean the world to me. Whether it’s my team, other students, teacher or anyone I’m thankful for every last person. I have learned so much from actions and from advice that these people give me. They have all helped me progress as a student athlete

AB: What steps have you taken, and what is your daily routine in order to improve yourself as an athlete?

TR:  I have a routine I follow everyday. I wake up with a new goal I want to achieve on and off the court. During school I take care of all work so I have more free time to work out in the afternoon. In the summer time I wake up at 6 am shoot 100 free throws and do ball control drills. Then the rest of the day I hit the ymca or boys & girls club and play all day.

AB: Finally, what do you aspire to accomplish as an athlete?

TR: I aspire to win a league title and become a better person on and off the court.

As Tyler continues to grow as both a player and a person, I could see him heading to the coaching ranks some day. With the energy and passion he brings to the game, along with his knowledge of the point guard position, I truly don’t see why he couldn’t be successful leading a team. However, for now, I’m sure Tyler and the Wildcats are much more focused on this season and their almost sure chance at a GR League Title. Good luck to Tyler and the entire Wheatland-Chili Basketball team as they progress towards the Sectional Tournament!!
