Since before she was in eighth grade, Madison has truly shined as an important part of the Batavia Girls Basketball program. With a smooth stroke from the perimeter, as well as a keen eye to make the correct pass in any situation, she has led the Devils to an impressive record this season and will likely continue to carry them to great things in the short and long term. Here is her profile:

Height: 5’4″
Class: Junior

Favorite thing about high school sports: “Being able to spend time with friends and create a bond with teammates while participating in something that you love. After seeing each other everyday in practice and games, you become a family and it’s  great feeling knowing that when you step out on the court there’s four other girls on there with you that have your back. Another great feeling is seeing how much your team progresses through the season as the competition starts to get tougher.”

Most memorable moments of high school sports career: “Through the years I’ve experienced many memorable moments with my teammates like making it to the Sectional Finals and being the first team in school history to be Division Champions. But one of the greatest moments was starting on Varsity in eighth grade with Tiara (Filbert). Tiara and I have been playing together since fourth grade and we have great chemistry on the floor. We always look for each other on the court, its just unexplainable the way we play together.”

Future plans after high school: “I’m not 100% sure of what my future plans are but I would like to continue my basketball career into college. I haven’t decided what I would like to study yet but I’ve narrowed it down to forensic sciences or accounting. I don’t plan on going anywhere far from home for college and have interest in Geneseo but nothing is decided as of right now.”

AB: Growing up, who was your biggest sports hero?

MM: Growing up my biggest sports heroes were my sister and my dad. I’m one of the very few people that have the luxury to say that they played with their older sister on Varsity for more than one season. She’s always been my role model and it was an incredible experience being on the court with her. My dad has taught me a lot about the game as I grew up and as the assistant coach it’s great to have him at practices and games because he continues to push me everyday so I can improve my game.

AB: While on the court, is there anything that makes you nervous?

MM: Even though I have a lot of experience at the Varsity level, close games and Sectional play still make me a little nervous. Just knowing that this might be the last game of the season makes my stomach drop.

AB: Are there any other sports you wish you would have played outside those you already play?

MM: Other than basketball I play volleyball. I would have liked to play a spring sport but as soon as basketball season is over AAU starts so it would be hard t commit to another sport when I still have basketball practice and tournaments on the weekends.

AB: What do you enjoy doing off the court?

MM: Off the court I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. Me and my friends always joke around when we’re together and there’s never a dull moment with them. I love to stay at home, relax and watch movies with my family but with volleyball, basketball, school. AAU, and a part time job, I’m always very busy. Basketball takes up most of my time even in the offseason but I manage to make time for other fun activities.

AB: What has been your most notable athletic accomplishment?

MM: When I scored my career-high of 30 points Freshman year in the Sectional semis.

Having watched Madison over her time as a Varsity player, what has impressed me most about her game has been her toughness. For example, in a game earlier this season against HFL, the Batavia guard dove for a loose ball and banged heads with an opposing player, and the contact was so hard that McCulley needed help getting off the floor and even seemed to be struggling to find her balance immediately after the collision. However, with a couple of deep breaths, the hard-nosed Junior was back out on the floor giving all she could to help her team win an important contest. If she, along with the Devils’ other key players, can continue to show their will and determination down the stretch, perhaps they can walk away with title at season’s end. Good luck to Madison and the Blue Devils in the upcoming Sectional Tournament!!
